This month we are continuing our student spotlight in News & Notes - from time to time we will use this newsletter to introduce our students to you! For April, we would like you to meet Maliyah!
Maliyah is a high school senior who is about to graduate from Charter High School. She was able to attend Charter through the generous gifts of organizations that have partnered with us. Maliyah has grown up attending the CAC! She has been deeply involved and attributes much of her growth to her relationships with teachers, volunteers, and mentors at the Center.
Maliyah first came to the CAC when she was 5 years old and has grown to be a student leader and positive role model for other students in her community and church. She has been a leader in our Pathways High School Program where she has developed life skills and job readiness, and had the opportunity to explore various colleges and career paths. Last year Maliyah was nominated to be on the Student Board of Directors for the Federal Reserve of St. Louis. She is the first student from East St. Louis to serve on this board!
Through college visits and learning about different careers, Maliyah applied and was accepted at SIUE and is planning to study nursing. During the pandemic she has been working hard to apply for scholarships and was awarded a full ride scholarship for Charter High School students to attend SIUE. Maliyah is caring, seeks out opportunities, and is open for feedback and help. She is hoping to make an impact in the field of nursing and bring awareness to needs that are specific to black women. We are so proud of Maliyah and know she will continue to bless others with her gifts! Thank you for investing in students like Maliyah and giving her and others opportunities to thrive!
