Child Therapist

Position Description

The Christian Activity Center, an urban children's ministry in East St. Louis, Illinois is seeking a licensed counselor or social worker to work with inner-city children affected by trauma. Therapist will develop individual treatment plans for children presenting with mental health concerns and organize small group counseling sessions to target widespread emotional needs.

Therapist must be willing to work evenings. Our after school program operates 12-8pm. Professional must engage comfortably in the life of the agency, communicating routinely with program staff and participating in planning, evaluation, and overall agency direction. Must have experience working with at-risk populations, specifically urban core, and demonstrate the skills to assist children in regaining and maintaining mental health after trauma.

Experience/Qualifications

LCSW, LCPC, Equivalent
One-to-one and group therapy experience with focus in children's counseling.

Goal: To heal the hearts of inner-city children and position them for multiple life-choices.

1) Work with program staff in identifying children with mental health concerns. Educate staff on best practices in fostering emotional management in children, and on the identification of behaviors indicating mental health needs.

2) Train children attending the Christian Activity Center (650 children) in emotional management, using but not limited to Second Step curriculum.

3) Engage in daily program life of the agency, building relationships with children and identify mental health concerns presenting. Attend all staff and department meetings.

4) Screen children presenting with mental health concerns using standardized diagnostic tools, including BASC2. Track assessment of children prior to and upon completion of therapy session/individualized treatment plan.

5) Document action plans and outcomes using agency case-management software for timely and accurate tracking (Efforts to Outcomes (ETO), training provided).

6) Develop individualized treatment plans for children presenting with serious mental health concerns.

7) Organize group therapy sessions targeting widespread emotional needs.

8) Desired outcomes: 90% of children educated in emotional management will show gains in at least 3 of 5 social competencies; 80% of children engaged in group therapy will demonstrate gains in self-esteem, coping and initiative; 95% of children counseled one-on-one will reach 4 of 5 goals outlined in their individual treatment plans.

9) Maintain a network of social support for clinical referral of children diagnosed with mental health disorders. Establish network of providers to assist children and families with wrap-around services related to child’s mental health.
